All 21 Red Fox Colours In Planet Zoo And How To Get Them

One of the things I love most about Planet Zoo is discovering all the different animal colours, which is why I made it my mission to collect each one!

I’ve already put together a list of every animal colour in the game, including those from the Twilight pack, but this time, I wanted to focus on the red fox and share how you can collect each of its colours.

I used sandbox mode for this, so none of the foxes had any previous genes that would affect their colours. This gave me a more accurate idea of how genetics works with colour morphs.

The red fox is pretty special in Planet Zoo as it has more colour variations than any other animal in the game, with 21 different colours to look out for.

Here’s a look at every red fox colour in Planet Zoo, along with tips on how to collect them all.

The Red Fox Colours

Red foxes come in three main shades: red, yellow-orange, and red-brown. All other colours are variations of these three.

Each of these colours also appear in three different patterns besides the usual solid colour: piebald, part melanistic, and part melanistic piebald.

Piebald foxes have a mix of red and white fur, while part melanistic foxes have red and black. The part melanistic piebald combines both, so they have a mix of red, white and black fur.

Since the melanistic piebald is a mix of two rare colour types, it is not listed accurately in the animal description. It appears as part melanistic. The only way to spot a piebald part melanistic fox is to look at its fur colour yourself.

That gives us our first 12 colour morphs.

Red

  1. Red
  2. Red part melanistic
  3. Red piebald
  4. Red part melanistic piebald

Yellow-Orange

  1. Yellow-orange
  2. Yellow-orange melanistic
  3. Yellow-orange piebald
  4. Yellow-orange part melanistic piebald

Red-Brown

  1. Red-brown
  2. Red-brown melanistic
  3. Red-brown piebald
  4. Red-brown part melanistic piebald

Melanistic Red Foxes

Red, red-yellow, and red-brown foxes can also produce melanistic foxes.

Melanistic foxes come in two main colours – black and silver. Each of these can also have a piebald variation.

The silver melanistic foxes have three colours; silver, grey, and dark grey.

This gives us eight more red fox colours.

Melanistic (Black)

  1. Melanistic (black)
  2. Melanistic piebald

Melanistic (Silver)

  1. Melanistic (silver): silver fur
  2. Melanistic (silver): silver fur piebald
  3. Melanistic (silver): grey fur
  4. Melanistic (silver): grey fur piebald
  5. Melanistic (silver): dark grey fur
  6. Melanistic (silver): dark grey fur piebald

This is another colour morph where the colour isn’t listed correctly in the animal information panel due to a mix of two rare coats (melanistic and piebald).

They are not listed as piebald and are listed the same way as melanistic foxes. This means the only way to identify a melanistic piebald fox is to look at the fox yourself.

Leucistic Red Fox

Finally, there is also a leucistic fox, which is the final colour in our list!

  1. Leucistic: white fur

How To Breed Red Fox Colours

You can easily find the three base colours, red, yellow-orange, and red-brown, in the animal market. From there, it’s just a matter of breeding these foxes and hoping for a rarer coat to appear.

Once you have a fox with a rare coat, you can either keep it in the trading centre for future breeding or pair it with a standard fox. There’s a 50% chance the babies will have the rare coat, and a 50% chance they’ll just carry the gene.

Inbreeding can lower immunity and fertility in your foxes, but it also makes it more likely to get a rare coat since both parents have the gene. For example, breeding offspring with a parent that carries the gene gives you a better chance of seeing a rare coat.

After you’ve collected a few different coat types, you can start breeding them together to discover even more variations.

For example, you could breed a piebald fox with a part melanistic fox and see if you get a part melanistic piebald. Or try pairing a red piebald with a yellow-orange fox and hope for a yellow-orange piebald.

Sometimes, the foxes will surprise you.  I once bred two black melanistic foxes and ended up with my first red-brown part-melanistic fox, due to red-brown genes in the parents.

I’ve also had two red piebald foxes produce a yellow-orange piebald baby, even though I kept the colours in separate habitats. I believe this is because sometimes, even two foxes of the same standard colour can have a baby with a different standard coat.
